Background[edit | edit source]
A cigarette is a small cylinder filled with tobacco and other substances rolled in a thin sheet of paper that is later lit on one end and inhaled through the other. Cigarettes were popularized during the two World Wars, where soldiers were given free cigarettes daily. Tobacco contains nicotine, a highly addictive drug, and soon cigarette factories grew rich as addiction kept customers coming back for more. In recent years, the health effects cigarettes have on the respiratory and circulatory systems have been studied, and many restrictions have been imposed by governments to prohibit the sale of cigarettes to minors, and to stop smokers from lounging around the entrances of public buildings.
