The North American football, not to be confused with a soccer ball, is an oval shaped ball used in American and Canadian football. Footballs are designed to be thrown or kicked, and have a "tacky" grip. Footballs are often nicknamed "pigskins," as the first footballs were made out of inflated pig bladders encased in leather skin. Modern footballs are made out of rubber and plastic, but the term "pigskin" stuck on as slang.
