Background[]
For most of its history, the US military relied on canned rations, which were heavy but cheap. The MRE (Meal, Ready to Eat) was designed as a lighter and more palatable alternative, ensuring soldiers would gain all the calories and nutrients they needed in combat without increasing the weight of their kit further. Whilst it initially failed at the "palatable" part, which earned it nicknames like "Meals Rejected by Everyone" or "Mr.Es" (Mysteries), the menu has been improved since then. Even old, preserved MREs are still extremely calorific, and survivors of the zombie apocalypse can’t afford to be picky.
Typically used as a combat ration, they have also been given out to civilians during disaster situations.
The Last Stand: Union City[]
MREs are used by the military as well as HERC to feed their troops while they're on duty in Union City and elsewhere. They are more commonly found in the Waterside Military Base and the HERC Outpost in Uptown.
It restores 15% Food at an average weight, making it one of the more effective food items. The player should stock up on these whenever possible.
The Last Stand: Dead Zone[]
Providing +2 
, it can be found throughout the Dead Zone, having been left behind when the military and HERC withdrew from the area. They are more commonly found on Small Streets and Streets, which contain abandoned military checkpoints and Humvees.
