Background[]
Someone who is bleeding profusely needs an ambulance. Immediately. However, in particularly remote areas, the nearest hospital may be an hour's drive away, and that is far too long for such a patient. Using nearby materials to produce an improvised bandage could mean the difference between a living patient or another addition to the morgue. Cloth or tissue paper can be wrapped around and taped to wounds to reduce blood loss, and countless household items, from towels to T-shirts to blankets and even curtains, contain enough cloth or cotton to keep someone alive just long enough for help to arrive.
