While staples hold stacks of paper together, removing them requires a special tool or a pair of brave hands. They also leave permanent holes in the sheets, an unsightly sight. Paper clips are used to temporarily hold small stacks of paper together. At its basics, paper clips are nothing more than a thin wire of metal or plastic coiled up in two loops. Paper is inserted between the two "tongues" of the clip, where torsion holds the paper together. Paper clips also have more exciting uses, since they're easy to bend out of shape, often into straight wires for use as lockpicks, or into intricate works of art.[1]
