The location of the Research button on the toolbar.

Research is a feature in The Last Stand: Dead Zone that allows the player to upgrade and improve their compound and equipment.[1] It is unlocked after completing the Research Bench.

Special research items may be found while scavenging in the Dead Zone. They may consist of notes or components.

Research projects[]

A completed research project.

Projects are classified into six categories: Comfort, Equipment, Production, Security, Storage, and Traps. Each project has ten levels of research, which correspond to the ten upgrade levels on the Research Bench. For example, a Level 5 project would require a Level 5 Research Bench to complete. All research projects take 20 hours to complete, and cannot be cancelled or sped up once initiated.[2]

The Research Bench cannot be upgraded if a project is currently underway, and projects cannot be initiated while the Research Bench is being upgraded.

The estimated time to complete all research projects is 18 months.[2]
