Gears have been in use since the time of the ancient Greek and Chinese. At its basics, gears are toothed wheels that "mesh," or move with, another gear or a set of gears, transferring torque (movement) in the process. A system of multiple gears working together is called a transmission. Gears come in different shapes and sizes,[1] and can have their speed and direction modified to better suit whatever job they are doing.
