Small metal gear.
Gears have been in use since the time of the ancient Greek and Chinese. At its basics, gears are toothed wheels that "mesh," or move with, another gear or a set of gears, transferring torque (movement) in the process. A system of multiple gears working together is called a transmission. Gears come in different shapes and sizes, and can have their speed and direction modified to better suit whatever job they are doing.
Found in most machines and often sold separately in hardware stores.
