Background[]
Also commonly referred to as the buttstock or "butt", the stock is the part of a firearm that rests upon the wielder's shoulder, providing a comfortable placement for the cheek and hands.[1] The stock helps the wielder stabilize the weapon, and prevents the recoil from sending it flying backwards by directing the force towards the shooter's body, where it gets absorbed. Traditional stocks have been constructed out of wood, although plastics and other synthetic materials are becoming popular.
Normally found on shotguns and rifles, although some pistols have them as well.
