Daring adventurers, sailing the world looking for treasure and thrills, involved in chivalry and love tales, and masters of swordsmanship are just some of the traits of the swashbuckler archetype. While originally seen as men that "made noise by striking (swash) on a shield (buckler)" challenging passersby to duels, they evolved into heroic and idealistic characters in early European adventure novels. The bicorne, a two cornered/horned hat, is just one of many hats worn by pirates during the 1650s.
